THE REBELLION of Absalom comes to a quick and bitter end. The wise counsel of David’s former adviser, Ahitophel, is disregarded, giving David and his loyal forces much-needed time to regroup and rest at Mahanaim, east of the Jordan.
The resulting battle in the Wood of Ephraim turns into a rout as David’s outnumbered troops destroy the army mustered by Absalom, who meets his end when his hair, in which he took great pride, catches in the branches of an oak tree.
